Lingyun specializes in coatings for electric motorcycle exterior components, serving electric motorcycle manufacturers as its downstream customers. The project focused on developing a customized Chrome Effect Silver Resin that delivers both a premium metallic appearance and excellent adhesion on ABS+PC mixed substrates, helping the customer enhance the competitiveness of its chrome coating solutions.
ABS+PC composite substrates are widely used in electric motorcycle components such as body panels, decorative trims, and instrument covers. However, due to the significant differences in polarity and surface properties between ABS and PC materials, achieving stable coating adhesion on both substrates remains a challenge.
The customer had clear requirements:

Challenge: Adhesion Issues on ABS+PC Mixed Substrates
Achieving strong adhesion on ABS+PC composite substrates has always been a challenge in plastic coating applications. Due to the different surface energies of ABS and PC, chrome coatings may struggle to form a uniform and durable bond across both materials.
During cross-cut adhesion testing, coatings often show inconsistent adhesion performance between ABS and PC areas, especially around the interface between the two materials, where localized peeling or coating failure may occur.
The customer required the chrome coating to pass the cross-cut test, which means the coating system needed to achieve Class 0 adhesion (cut edges completely smooth with no coating removed) or Class 1 adhesion (coating detachment at the intersections not exceeding 5%). This requirement tested the resin system’s compatibility and adhesion capability on mixed plastic substrates.
