Creating a premium metallic appearance on cosmetic packaging is not only about achieving high gloss. The coating must also provide reliable adhesion, resist cracking, and remain compatible with sensitive plastic substrates. A-8100PS-8 mirror finish chrome effect silver resin was developed for a skincare packaging project using PS and HIPS substrates, with a one-component, air-drying, inner-spray application.
In this project, the coating was sprayed on the outer surface of the inner container, while the final metallic appearance was viewed through a transparent outer bottle. Therefore, even small coating defects such as haze, uneven metallic appearance, or orange peel could become much more visible through the transparent shell.
Three Key Requirements for the Mirror Chrome Finish
The customer required three critical performance characteristics.
First, the coating needed to create a true mirror-like metallic effect, rather than a standard silver appearance.
Second, it had to provide strong adhesion on both PS and HIPS substrates and pass cross-cut adhesion testing without peeling.
Finally, the coating needed to remain crack-free under air-drying conditions, even without a baking process.
Why PS and HIPS Are Difficult to Coat
PS and HIPS are widely used in cosmetic packaging, but they also create several coating challenges.
Solvent Sensitivity
PS and HIPS are sensitive to solvents. If the solvent system is too aggressive, it may soften the substrate, create surface haze, or even cause serious substrate damage.
Mirror Finish vs. Adhesion
A strong mirror effect requires aluminum pigments to align closely and uniformly on the coating surface.
However, improving pigment orientation can reduce the resin’s wetting and bonding ability. As a result, formulators often face a difficult balance between mirror appearance and adhesion.
Crack Resistance During Air Drying
Without baking, solvent evaporation can cause coating shrinkage and internal stress.
Therefore, rigid plastic substrates such as PS may be more likely to develop cracking if the resin system does not control internal stress effectively.
How A-8100PS-8 Solves These Challenges
Boya developed A-8100PS-8 mirror finish chrome effect silver resin specifically for the characteristics of PS and HIPS.
Gentle Solvent System
The solvent system was optimized to maintain resin solubility while reducing the risk of attacking sensitive PS/HIPS substrates.
This helps protect the plastic surface while still creating the conditions required for a high-quality mirror finish.
Balanced Aluminum Pigment Orientation and Adhesion
A-8100PS-8 helps aluminum pigments form a dense and uniform arrangement on the coating surface.
Meanwhile, the resin also provides good wetting and bonding performance on PS substrates. Therefore, the coating can achieve both mirror appearance and reliable adhesion.
Controlled Internal Stress
The formulation was also designed to manage shrinkage and stress release during air drying.
As a result, the coating remained free from cracking and crazing after full drying in the customer’s validation process.
Customer Validation on PS and HIPS
According to the project feedback, the customer achieved a clear mirror-like reflection with A-8100PS-8, rather than just a standard metallic effect.
The customer also repeated the cross-cut adhesion test three times and reported no peeling on either PS or HIPS substrates.
In addition, after one week under self-drying conditions, the coating showed no cracking or crazing.
One Trial, Faster ODM Development
The customized A-8100PS-8 sample passed customer validation on the first trial and then moved into the next stage of commercial cooperation.
For cosmetic packaging applications, achieving mirror appearance, adhesion, and crack resistance in one development cycle can help reduce repeated testing and shorten the commercialization process.
If you are developing mirror chrome coatings for cosmetic packaging on PS or HIPS substrates, A-8100PS-8 provides a targeted resin solution for balancing premium appearance with practical coating performance.
